Tableau Blended Axis

Tableau Software Information 0.2 [ IT ]

Blended Axis in Tableau

It is also called as combined axis or shared axis chart.

In Tableau Blended Axis we combine & analyze more than two measures together in a multi line graphs or charts. So that we can plot as many measures as we like in the same chart.

In Blended axis all the measures are shown on single axis.

So in blended Axis all measures have same marks cards and same scale.

It is useful in comparing measures with same data type and scale.

For Example , Sales ,Profit, Budget etc.

How to create Blended Axis chart in Tableau method 1

1     To create Blended Axis Chart first we create graph for any single measure among many                          measures that we are analyzing.

2     Then drag second, third and other measures we want to add one by one & blend it in first axis                of the measure to create a graph with multiple measures blended into one axis.

3     Our single blended axis with multiple measures will holds all the range values from the                          source of all the measures which are blended in to one axis.

4     At this point name of the axis changes to ‘Values’.

5     Here all the measures will have only one marks card . i.e. if we change it to bar then bar is for all           the measures ,if you change it to line then line is for all the measures.

How to create Blended Axis chart in Tableau method 2

1    To create Blended Axis Chart first we drag and drop column value that we want in to column.

2    Now in second step, if you look at the left side in measures list we can see  ‘measure values’, In              'Measure Values' all the measures combined into one measure.

3     Drag this 'Measure Values' into rows .

4     You can see all the measures in our graph but we don't want these many measures so                               simply remove all the unwanted measures from measure values section .

5     If we want to analyze only sales and profit then keep these two measures only in the list.

6     Here our blended axis graph for sales and profit is ready .

Dual Axis Chart in Tableau

1 It is also called as combination charts. It involves two axes which are independent of each other            & are used to compare two measures which have different scales.

2 For creating dual axes you need continuous data fields,                                                                              For example Sales , revenue ,profit and date fields .

3 In the explanation I will use sample store data set which I have found free on google, you can                  use any data you want.

Dual Axis chart with two measures

1 We have Sales, Profit, and Sub-Category fields in our sample data set. We will use sales and                    profit for making dual axis chart.

2 For Creating Dual Axis chart first Drag Sub-Category into Columns.

3 And Drag Sales and profit into Rows.

4 Right Click on Second measure on rows sum(Profit) in our case and select Dual Axis .

5 Now you can see Dual Axis chart of Sales and Profit but if you notice both the measures have              different marks cards & you can format two measures differently.

6 If we want to have a bar chart for Sales, click on the SUM(Sales) section on the Marks card                    and choose Bar from the drop down menu.

7 Also you can select Line Chart for Profit from Sum(Profit) section of marks card.

8 You can decide whether or not two axes should be synchronized. To do so, right click on the                    Profit axis and select Synchronize Axis.

9 And here our Bar & Line Dual Axis chart or Combination Chart is ready.

Dual Axis Map with two measures

1 To Create Dual Axis map select States into data pane .

2 Now select profit into colors ,and change chart to Map. This is a map for Profit.

3 Press control “ctr” and drag latitude next to latitude and we get two maps.

4 Now in the marks card of second map remove profit and drag sales into size and select circle                  from drop down also adjust the size ,color, border  if you want .

5 Once you get two separate maps for Sales & Profit respectively, to make dual axis map we                       simply click on second latitude from rows and select Dual Axis.

6 And our Dual axis map for Sales & Profit is ready.

I hope that this helps you to understand how to create Dual Axis Chart & Map in Tableau.
